I would love to hear from others about ways to promote a swicki to other webmasters and build up a user base.
The main thing that has worked for me so far has been to build relationships though my blog with other similar bloggers and hope they link to my swicki in their blogroll.
I have not had much luck with getting webmasters to add my search widget to their sites (except for a few small bloggers I contacted)
Any ideas you guys have tried and found successful?
Sorry if I sounded a like I was looking for cheap tricks for forcing my swicki on others.
I definitely believe in building a community atmosphere and promoting others instead of cheap self(selfish)-promotion. I created my swicki to help others
I would love to hear how you do what you've mentioned.
How do you "do it for them" and "promote them" in concrete terms?
Could you give some examples?
I can not promote any of my swickis in the moment, because some of them are set to "noindex, nofollow". Also when they get traffic from own websites or other webmasters, there is also a robots.txt on the server of Eurekster, which is stopping also the Google Adsense Bot!
This situation makes no sense for me. :-(
There is a SwickiPRO version coming where we can host everything on our own site. I think that would solve that problem.
Kind of wish self-hosting was a free option, but the swicki people have to eat too, right?
I have spend over 80 hours work in configurating and the administration of all my over 40 local city swickis. All of them have a good and spam free tag cloud. Since Eurekster made this "noindex" and this bad robots.txt I spend only the neccassery time in them. I dont know the CEO of Eurekster, but I think he has made with this a not useful decision against the Web 2.0 Community.
Yes, I have to eat too. :-)
Since December the idea of all my swickis, and I created almost 30 Swickis, doesn't work out anymore. I don't know what I did bad to you and your company. There is no more any google adsense advert which fits to the topics on the swickis. The Swickis themselves cannot be promoted to anybody, because, as Erik mentioned already above, your company surprisingly stopped me and my Swickis from normal procedere, not informing us, your customers, switching off the metas and here Erik is also right, changed the robots txt, so therefore you and I lost and still loose a lot. Does it make sense to anybody, to you and to me?
The robots.txt file prevents Google's bots from spidering swickis that are not in the directory. If you want Google to see your swicki, you can move it to your domain or have it approved for the directory.
We limited the exposure of swickis in our directory in mid-December while more strictly enforcing our Terms and Conditions. This move was mentioned in our blog, and this post was exhibited prominently on our homepage for 2 months.
We believe that there are significant opportunities for swicki builders to promote their swickis to all types of internet users without relying on Google's traffic (per this discussion's original post). Many swicki builders have embraced this opportunity and have been quite successful.
A swicki is a community-powered social search tool, that can be trained to service a particular site or multiple sites. Successful swickis tend to build an audience naturally using many of the techniques used to build any successful web property.
ok, thank you. Slowly I get the answers I was waiting for during the last months now from you.
Onother question coming up now is, why are my Swickis which are registered at the directory facing the same problems?
For example: http://mombasa-search-engine-swicki.eurekster.com
And the other question is what do you gain, keeping the apropriate adverts out of it? I guess you and me loose a lot.
